Spirit of Shen Valley is the sixth episode of Season 3 of Thomas: The Trainz Adventures and the twenty-sixth episode overall.
Plot[]
It's Halloween on Sodor, a time which many engines enjoy, but not everyone, one of them being Percy. That night, Edward begins his annual Halloween story, this one being about an engine who travelled through Shen Valley and derailed, crashing into the valley itself. Skeletons and his old lamp were found by workmen following his accident, and the discovery was reported to the authorities. However, a workmen kept the old lamp. Legend has it that the engine travels the rails of the valley, searching for his lamp.
Despite the story, the bigger engines don’t believe it and brush it off, saying that they haven’t heard any ghost engine while travelling through Shen Valley. Percy is scared of the prospect of a ghost engine, but is assured by Henry. The Fat Controller arrives and tasks Percy to collect Paxton’s trucks and bring them to the Blue Mountain Quarry since he has broken down. He also tasks Gordon with collecting the guests for the fireworks display. The bigger engines tease him about watching out for the ghost engine, and Percy tries to assure himself that there is not such thing as ghosts.
Upon entering Shen Valley, Percy becomes scared at almost everything he sees. He stops at a signal and the signalman clears him to proceed after checking on some disturbance down the line. Sometime later, Percy thinks he hears the ghost engine after a cold wind and a mysterious sound echo through the air. Convinced that it’s the ghost, he runs away and almost passes Paxton before he orders him to stop. The two prepare for the ghost’s arrival, only to learn that it’s Philip, who is there to take Paxton to the Dieselworks. Percy collects the trucks and starts heading for the quarry, again trying to assure himself that there’s no such thing as ghosts.
However, he stops in his tracks when he actually sees the ghost Edward told about. He cries out about a lamp and a warning, which confuses Percy at first, before he deduces that the lamp serves as a warning lamp. Just then, he hears Gordon’s whistle and decides to warn him of the damaged tracks. Gordon initially teases him as they pass each other, but concludes that Percy wouldn’t joke about damaged tracks, and begins to slow down as he nears the damaged tracks. He stops just in time right before the tracks are dragged into a collapse into the valley. Percy checks on him, and Gordon thanks him for saving him.
The Fat Controller arrives on Edward and praises Percy for his efforts, while Bertie takes Gordon‘a passengers. Percy is still an engine who gets easily scared, but knows now that he has a trusted friend in the spirit of Shen Valley.
